The chill of winter is easing, and warmer months are quickly approaching. Just as you would prepare your car or wardrobe for the change of season, your home deserves the same attention. Summer in South Africa often brings heat, social gatherings, and festive activity, making it the perfect time to get your space in order.
According to Brenda Lange, Principal at Leapfrog Kempton Park, preparing your home for summer isn’t just about aesthetics. “A few simple tasks now can save you money later, while also creating a welcoming space for family and friends,” says Lange.“Whether you live in a large house, a townhouse, or a small apartment, there are easy ways to make your home more comfortable and summer-ready.”
Refresh outdoor woodwork
Summer preparation begins here if you have wooden features, like a deck, pergola, balcony railings, or even small outdoor furniture. Sun and rain can quickly damage exposed wood. Sanding and re-staining, or applying a protective varnish, both revitalise the look and protect against the elements.
“Wood tends to fade and crack if it’s not maintained,” explains Lange. “A quick refresh not only keeps it looking good but extends its lifespan.”
Renter’s tip: If you’re not able to do major work, a simple wood oil treatment on a small outdoor table or chair can make a noticeable difference.
Brighten windows and exterior walls
Winter rains often streak windows and mark walls with grime. Now is the ideal moment for a thorough clean. Start with windows, inside and out, and then look at the bigger picture. Power-washing walls, pathways, and paving stones lifts away moss and damp stains, giving your home an instant facelift.
While you’re outside, take the opportunity to check for minor maintenance issues. Are there cracks in the plaster that need sealing? Do windows need caulking? “Addressing small repairs before summer heat sets in can prevent them from becoming larger problems,” says Lange.
Apartment dwellers: Even if you don’t have outdoor walls or paving to maintain, clean windows can dramatically brighten up your living space.
Revive outdoor furniture
For many South Africans, summer is synonymous with entertaining. Outdoor furniture is often neglected during the colder months, so it’s worth giving it attention before guests arrive. Wash cushions, wipe down tables and chairs, and check for signs of wear.
“Clean furniture sets the tone for your summer gatherings,” says Lange. “Even a small balcony feels more inviting when your seating is fresh and well-kept.”
Renter’s tip: If storage space is limited and your outdoor furniture is exposed year-round, consider investing in inexpensive covers to protect your pieces when not in use.
Improve insulation
Few South African homes come with central heating or cooling, which makes insulation even more important. A well-insulated home stays cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Good insulation also helps to. reduce the need for constant air conditioning or heaters.
“If your home has an attic, now is a good time to check insulation levels,” notes Lange. “Adding or updating insulation can make a noticeable difference to indoor comfort and energy bills.”
Even in apartments without attics, renters and owners can both benefit from smaller insulation fixes. Draft stoppers under doors, thermal curtains, or reflective window film can help maintain cooler indoor temperatures during hot days.
Service air conditioning units
If you rely on air conditioning, servicing your unit before summer is essential. Changing filters and having a technician check for issues ensures that your system runs efficiently and improves air quality.
“Your aircon works harder during summer, so preventive maintenance reduces the risk of breakdowns and keeps energy costs lower,” advises Lange.“Clean filters are essential for households with allergy sufferers.”
For renters, even a portable or window unit should be cleaned and checked. Dust buildup can reduce efficiency and circulation.
Preparing your home for summer doesn’t need to be overwhelming or expensive. You can tackle small, manageable tasks that collectively make a big difference. This includes tasks such as freshening up outdoor furniture, sealing cracks and maintaining insulation. These steps protect your home while making it more enjoyable during the festive season.
“Think of it as an investment in your quality of life,” says Lange. “It’s about creating a space that supports the way you want to live and entertain over summer.”
And remember, whether you’re a homeowner or a renter, summer readiness is about comfort, not size. Even a studio apartment can feel airy, cool, and welcoming with the right preparation.
