The house was occupied by the Fischer Family during Braam’s childhood and teenager years. The house was built in the early 1900’s for its original owner, before being purchased by Braam’s father, an attorney who was later to become a judge and judge president. During the1920’s the wing to the right of the building as seen from the street was built, together with an extension to the front verandah. At that stage the house, which had originally been of red face brick, was plastered and painted white . The original wooden verandah posts and railings were replaced with the neo classical columns that we see today.
The house as proclaimed a National Monument on account of its associations with Bram Fischer, and the fact that it is one of the last remaining examples of a Westdene house of 120 years ago.
In terms of current heritage legislation, the house is now a provincial heritage site
